What the heck is "K-factor" ?
SUM OF EACH.
turning radius FT. X weight LBS. = K-FACTOR OF FOOT POUNDS

HERE IS HELP TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT SIZE ROTOR FOR YOUR BEAM.

In addition to wind load and torque ratings, Yaesu also offers a specification called "K-factor," which is derived by multiplying the turning radius of the antenna (in feet) by the weight of the antenna (in pounds). Add the K-factor of each antenna on the mast together for your total system K-factor. The resulting number (in foot-pounds) must be less than the K-factor rating for the rotator.

For example, the Hygain TH-11DXS has a 12.5 square foot wind load. The Yaesu G-800DXA rotator will handle up to 17 square feet. When you multiply the antenna's turning radius, which is 22 feet, by the weight of the antenna, you get a K-factor of 1,936 foot-pounds. So, although the wind load rating of the rotator would seem to indicate that it will handle the antenna, the K-factor of the antenna is greater than what the rotator will handle. If we look at the K-factor rating of the Yaesu G-1000DXA, we see that it is 2,020 foot-pounds, so it's the correct choice.

Let's see what happens when we add a large 2m beam to the mast. The Cushcraft 17B2, for example has a turning radius of 17.25 feet, and weighs 16 pounds. Multiply the two and you get a K-factor of 276 foot-pounds. Add the two K-factors together (276+1,936) and we get a combined K-factor of 2,212 foot-pounds. The G-1000DXA will not handle this load.

At this point we can either use a G-2800SDX, which will handle a K-factor of up to 6,870 foot-pounds, which is obviously overkill. The other choice would be to go with a smaller 2m antenna, like the Cushcraft 13B2 which has a K-factor of about 60 foot-pounds. This gives our stack a total K-factor of 1,996 foot-pounds, which is within the rating of the G-1000DXA.

Yaesu rotators are great! They offer great features and have reasonable prices, but you really have to understand how K-factor determines how the rotator will perform. K-factor: Learn it, love it, live it. Your rotator will love you for it
