ICOM  IC-706MKIIG REVIEW BY JIM BAUDO, N0UQZ MY PERSONAL RADIO

REVIEW RATING 1 LOWEST 10 HIGHEST IN RED.
COMMENTS ARE ALSO IN RED

THE MOST PERFECT ALL MODE HF - 6 METER, VHF - UHF, I HAVE USED.
I RECOMMEND RADIOS TO PEOPLE EVERY DAY. THEY CALL ME, THEY E-MAIL ME. THEY COME TO MY SHACK. THEY ASK WHAT IS THE BEST COMBINATION FOR MOBILE AND BASE USE. MY ANSWER IS THE ICOM 706MIIG. IT FILLS THE NEEDS OF 99 % OF THE HAMS.  THEY ASK IF I HAVE EVER TRIED A YAESU FT 100 AND HOW THEY COMPARE AND MY ANSWER IS I HAVE NOT USED ONE AND I STILL KNOW OF NO ONE IN NEBRASKA THAT HAS ONE. I HAVE INFLUENCED AT LEAST 100 PLUS HAMS IN PURCHASING THE ICOM 706. I HAVE NEVER HAD ONE COME BACK AND SAY I TOLD THEM WRONG. I HAVE ALWAYS TOLD THE HAM THAT LIVES IN THE CITY THAT THEY WOULD NEED A DCI FILTER FOR SERIOUS 2 METER CW AND SSB USE. I ALSO TOLD THEM THAT I BELIEVE THAT THE DCI FILTER WILL ADD 100 TO 150 MILES ON TO THE RECEIVE RANGE ON TO MOST ANY 2 METER RIG DOING SINGLE SIDEBAND. ON UHF 440 THE DCI FILTER IS ALSO A NECESSARY CHOICE, ESPECIALLY IN A METRO AREA.
UPDATED INFORMATION 3/1/2002 NEW DUALBAND DCI FILTER NOW AVAILABLE.

Subject: ICOM IC-706MKIIG
Hi, I read your review of this radio and it sounds great.  However, there is one feature I'm in dire need of and haven't heard anything about while researching the IC-706MKIIG, that's cross band repeat.  I need my mobile rig to rebroadcast my HT, no questions asked.  I use this feature as much as I'm talking directly on my mobile itself, in other words, I'm on the repeat more than I'm on the mic.  In addition, I would like my mobile HF/VHF/UHF rig to be all one unit and be capable of cross band repeat from VHF/UHF to 6 or 10 meter.  Is the IC-706MKIIG going To do this for me?  If not, do you know of a rig that will?  All I know of is Kenwood's expandable VHF/UHF model, but that hardly makes an HF rig out of itself, considering there is only room for one module, and the 10 meter module is no longer available.

thx,  Wes Bowen  N3VYS
ANSWER:  THE ICOM 706 WILL NOT DO CROSSBAND REPEAT. I RECOMMEND THE KENWOOD TS 2000B THIS UNIT DOES CROSSBAND REPEAT AND MORE. IT HAS A BUILT IN ANTENNA TUNER ALSO. IT HAS THE ABILITY TO CHANGE THE OPERATING FREQUENCY FROM A HT. I RECOMMEND USING THE KENWOOD TH F6A  HANDI TALKIE  THAT RECEIVES SSB HF ALSO.

READ MORE REVIEWS: THE KENWOOD B2000 IS A COMPACT UNIT, WITH MORE FEATURES AND A BUILT IN ANTENNA TUNER STANDARD.
